Unrivaled, the professional women’s basketball league, has successfully closed an oversubscribed Series A investment round, raising $28 million in funding. The round was led by the Berman Family and includes contributions from a star-studded group of investors, including 8-time NBA All-Star and NBA Champion Giannis Antetokounmpo through Build Your Legacy Ventures, Linda Henry (Co-Owner/CEO of Boston Globe Media and Partner at Fenway Sports Group), Avenue Sports Fund, Marc Lasry, 23-time Gold Medalist Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole Phelps, 3-time NCAA Champion Coach Dawn Staley, Warner Bros. Discovery, and USC Sophomore Guard JuJu Watkins, among others.
Many of the same high-profile investors who supported Unrivaled’s $7 million seed round have returned to back the Series A round, bringing the league’s total capital raised to $35 million ahead of its inaugural season. The funding also includes investment from Amy Banse, Black Economic Alliance Venture Fund, Threadneedle Ventures, Off-Court Ventures, former NBA All-Star Richard ‘Rip’ Hamilton, and 11-year NBA veteran Joe Ingles.
“As women’s sports continue to grow in popularity, we’re thrilled by the momentum behind Unrivaled and the strong backing from our investors,” said Unrivaled President Alex Bazzell. “Our players haven’t even stepped on the court yet, but the foundation we’re building with our partners—combining expertise, strategic insight, and a top-tier product—sets the stage for Unrivaled’s success for years to come.”
The Series A round also attracted support from a range of influential sports figures and business leaders, including Avenue Capital’s Marc Lasry, who noted that Unrivaled’s innovative business model positions the league to thrive within the larger sports ecosystem.
Unrivaled, which was announced in 2023 by co-founders Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, is a league owned by its players. Every athlete in the inaugural season has equity and a vested interest in its success. The league recently revealed its six club rosters and full 2025 schedule, with the first game set for January 17, 2025. The game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports, with all games streamed on Max.
